Abstract

Ungulates and their predators of central Slovakian mountains

dipl ing Slavomír Finďo PhD

Current presentation refers to the research and conservation project results collated mostly in the mountainous areas of central Slovakia over last 13 years. A brief overview of running projects will be also provided. Central Slovakian mountains harbour most valuable wildlife habitats from the point of view of biodiversity. Of large mammalian species native and introduced ungulates strive here including red deer, roe deer, wild boar, chamois, fallow deer and mouflon. Top predators are represented by the brown bear, wolf and lynx. Within the whole study area where we worked over last years apec carnivores are sympatric with ungulates, thus there was an unique opportunity to study their interrelationships as well as relationships of ungulates with forest vegetation. Besides applied zoology and wildlife conservation issues we were dedicated to some forestry and wildlife management problems including development of deer proof reppelants and contributing to the large scale wildlife management system that was approved in 2009. The projects were carried out under the umbrella of two institutions: The National Forest Centre – Forest Research Institute Zvolen and the Carpathian Wildlife Society.
