Title
Dispersal and inbreeding in an island population of Blue Tits
Abstract
In birds many observations can and have been made on movements of ringed individuals between site of birth and site of
breeding. However, the resulting distributions are strongly affected by the distribution of suitable habitat and by the
spatial distribution of observers.
I will present a new method that filters out the effects of effort and use this method to study the effect of habitat
discontinuities. Since most blue tits breeding on Vlieland were also born there, these data provide the largest numbers
of breeding pairs where female and male are known to be related. I will show that there is no evidence for a relation
between distance dispersed and chance to mate a close relative and I will further show that negative effects of
inbreeding cause a selection that reduces the realised inbreeding by about 50 %.
